Listen To Enhance Your Leadership

Listening has been described by Frances Hesselbein as an effective way of learning what others value. We listen to our customers, we listen to our employees and we listen to our shareholders. We listen to our spouse, we listen to our loved ones and we listen to our friends. Many people say that they do not know what to say in a conversation. Well, just listen. Most people just want someone to listen to them. You be that listening leader and your organisation, your team and your family will benefit.

Listen To Enhance Your Leadership

Benefits of Effective Listening

  1. Shows that you care
  2. Helps you find out what others need or want.
  3. Builds rapport and mutual respect between people.
  4. Rewards you with increased customer confidence which easily translates to return business.
  5. Increases participation employees.
  6. It makes you pleasant to be around

Listening takes on a bigger significance when leaders leave their offices to meet employees on the shop floor. In such instances, listening conveys a feeling of inclusion, a sense of contribution and inclusion in the decision making process. It is also worth noting that the content of the discussion, that is what is being talked about, is not so important when it is the boss who doing the listening.

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care ~ John Maxwell

The listening leader must exhibit a genuine concern for the subordinate or the listening and chatting may be perceived as a trick.

In small organisations, the close proximity of the leader to the front line means that listening and chatting must be an integral part of the work. There has to be a deliberate effort to incorporate non work related talk into conversations. I had someone once tell me that my work environment was too quiet. Social chatter needs to be a part of the work culture, to deliberately create the unofficial communications channel where issues and concerns are made. And the leader(s) must be a part of this.

6 Keys to Effective Listening

  1. Show Genuine Concern.

You will have to show an interest in the discussion. You facial expression and body language be congruent and express you interest in the topic. You have to stop all other activity and focus on the person talking.

  1. Listen with the Intention to Understand.

One of the most common things people do when another person is talking is to begin rehearsing their own contribution. Steven Covey calls this Empathic Listening. You are listening to get the other persons frame of reference see the world from that persons point of view.

  1. Suspend Judgement

It is so easy to think that we know where the story is going to end and as such we begin to interject with our own conclusions based on our point of view and experiences. This will not help your listening. You need to listen to the whole story before making up your mind as to what is being conveyed. This takes some patience and practice but I very rewarding.

  1. Summarise What You Have Heard.

There is a need to reassure the person speaking that you are listening. One of the ways to do this is to summarise what you have heard when the speaker has major pauses. This must be done with great care so that it is not perceived as interruptions. Use your own words to express what you have heard. This also gives the person speaking an opportunity to clarify any misunderstandings.

  1. Ask Questions.

Asking questions is an important part of the listening process. It shows the speaker that you are listening and interested in the discussion. It also allows you an opportunity to clarify points that you have not understood.

  1. Don’t Interrupt.

This can be a difficult one especially if you find yourself with someone who likes to talk. If you have limited time, state that clearly at the beginning of the conversation and when you have to leave, find a pause in the conversation and state your intention to end the conversation at that point.

Are you a good listener? If so leave a comment.

The Cries for Inspirational Leadership (Part 2)

Leaders must be tough enough to fight, tender enough to cry, human enough to make mistakes, humble enough to admit them, strong enough to absorb the pain, and resilient enough to bounce back and keep on moving ~ Jesse Jackson

Inspirational Leadership

Inspirational Leadership

Leadership is influence. As the leader your words and action will undoubtably have some influence over your followers. You inspire action in others.

Now here’s the question, who or what inspires you to stand out and take your place as a leader? Is there anyone in your world who stand out as role model for the type of leader you aspire to be? There is a global cry for inspired leaders to stand up and take their stand. Leadership role models are needed at all levels in government, business and in not for profits.

About Inspirational Leadership

  1. Intuition

Inspirational leaders are intuitive and learn to trust their instincts. This is not to say that guesswork or the roll of the dice is the hall mark of their leadership. But that they subject their hunch or gut feeling to other confirmatory tests in making the right calls or decisions. This kind of sets you apart because you arrive at a different and unique conclusion based on the facts presented.

  1. Positive attitude

Another characteristic of inspired leaders is their positive attitude. Everyone wants to be around a person with a positive attitude. So a positive attitude is like a magnet that attracts people towards you. Likewise a negative attitude will drive positive people away from you. So take negativity out of your life. Steer clear of those who drag other people down because they will be a dragging force in your life.

  1. Aptitude

Your skills, ability and proficiency for the tasks ahead will project your personal disposition and capacity to influence more people, provide direction and solve problems in the workplace. There is no need to know everything about your business or industry. You only need to have a handle on the information and knowledge that gives you an edge over others.

  1. Personal Character

Your personal character, temperament, reputation, integrity and humility will enhance whatever leadership skills you have or have developed.

  1. Experience

The stories that people hear of your experience and tenacity can make the inspirational leader stand out larger than life. Experience build capacity and confidence

The real essence of inspirational leadership is to know to deploy your leadership skills, knowledge and experience in ways that would build others up. The highpoint of inspirational leadership is therefore continuos knowledge transfer to others around you and supporting you. This is carried out through your coaching, mentoring and other people developing activities that you carry out.

TEAM – Is it?

I am a member of a team and I rely on the team. I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual is the champion. ~ Mia Hamm

Rowing Team

According to Patrick Lencioni, it’s not finance, strategy or technology that gives a company the ultimate advantage. It’s the people and their ability to subordinate their individuality for the greater goal of achieving team objective.

If done successfully, working as teams can be very rewarding both for the organisation and the individuals who make up the team. But teams are made up of people and the default nature of the human being is the individual. We live in a “I”, “me” and “my” world.

The more complex the work to be accomplished the greater the need for team effort. And that’s what make teams powerful. Together you can achieve more when everyone is moving in the same direction.

Examples of Team Accomplishments

  1. Building the Tower of Babel
  2. Building the Space Shuttle
  3. Building the worlds biggest passenger airplane
  4. Building the worlds tallest bridge
  5. Building the computer or mobile device on which you are reading this article.

People are your greatest asset and your greatest liability.

Its not all the time that you have the ability or luxury of picking who is on your team. For example, when you have been chosen to be part of a team at work or in other settings. However, should you have the opportunity to pick your team, take some time to think about it because your success can depend on who is on the team with you or who is not.

To grow your business beyond yourself, other people need to be a part of what you are doing.  Here are a few things to consider before setting out to find the right people for your team.

5 Things to Consider

1. How big is your dream?

John F Kennedy set the target of being the first nation to safely take a man to the moon and back. Bill Gates dreamt of a computer on every desk and in every home. You need to dream big and you need to be able to start small. If you can do it alone, there is no point in getting others on board.

2. Can you articulate your dream?

It doesn’t matter how big your dream is, if you can’t put it in words and paint a picture for some to see, you will find it difficult to attract the right people. You may attract some people who are desperate for work. If you had only one and a half minutes to talk about your idea to a potential investor, what would you say? Spend some time clarifying your ideas and craft your words.

3. Is there an opportunity for people to grow and develop?

Is there going to be any transformation in their lives as a result of being part of your team? Invest in the training and development of your team members. Ensure that your team members have the opportunity to acquire the new skills that will take your business to the next level. Give them the space and watch as they take your business to the next level.

4. What is the reward for joining your team?

This is such an important question because everyone will ultimately want an answer to the question “what’s in it for me?”. Remember Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Beyond money, people want a sense of belonging, achievement and purpose. What have you got to offer? While team members may subordinate their individual ambition for team success, great teams are made of people who can achieve some or all of their personal goals while working on team goals.

5. Are you a team player yourself?

Do you know it all? Do your find it difficult to let go after you have assigned work? Are you pleasant to be around?

One is too small a number to achieve greatness ~ John C Maxwell

To be a team player, you must be

  • Trustworthy
  • Comminicative
  • Commited
  • Accountable
  • Enthusastic
  • Result focused

The Cries for Inspirational Leadership (Part 1)

Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action is what can change the world ~  Joel Baker

Inspirational Leadership

Partnership

Leadership is perhaps best viewed as a partnership – the partnership between the “leader” and the “led”. The goal of beneficial leadership in this regard would be to facilitate and unlock the potentials of the parties to achieve desired end results. In this context, a good leader is the person that acts as the bridge linking people to their goals through inspired actions. This distinguishes a true leader from a “greeder”. A “greeder” is the person that benefits only at the expense of the people that he or she leads.

There are people today in diverse positions of power, influence and authority who exploit the will, trust and belief of the people they supposedly lead. The often silent but agonising cry of these people for inspirational leadership is often met with more brazen exploitation.

Inspirational Leadership

Personal inspiration rather than mere motivation is what makes the leader stand out. Inspiration is far superior to motivation. It is a process that is spirit-induced and heart-controlled. It is revolutionary in concept and dynamic in approach. An inspired person is energised, enthusiastic and so passionate about his convictions that he is perpetually restless and tireless in pursuit of his goals.

I remember once asking a class during a coach-training session if well known transformational leaders like Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and Bill Gates, among several others were inspired or merely motivated to do what they are recorded to have done? There was not one person in the class that was not convinced that these leaders were personally inspired.

Inspired Leaders Make Lasting Impact

Many scientists, writers, politicians, entrepreneurs, philosophers, entertainers, artists, teachers and others that make lasting impact in the lives of others and in their communities have been personally inspired to do so. Each of them has through some personal ingenuity made the world a better and happier place for others, because there has been a massive and irresistible personal drive to make a lasting impact. Personal inspiration is a hallmark of true leadership.

Strength from within

You cannot stop a truly inspired leader or even try to put him down, because he is propelled by forces of stronger convictions within him than all the negativism around him. That is why true personal inspiration is the key to successful leadership. A leader that is not personally inspired often ends up being the puppet of other people.

The Next Generation

A challenge of leadership succession and ascension is that some entrenched systems do not often favour the emergence and sustenance of truly inspired leaders. As a result, the transformation that the people earnestly desire continues to elude them.

#11. Risk

Leadership 101 Series

Fear stifles our thinking and actions. It creates indecisiveness that results in stagnation. I have known talented people who procrastinate indefinitely rather than risk failure. Lost opportunities cause erosion of confidence, and the downward spiral begins ~ Charles Stanley

Wikipedia describes risk as a potential for loss (due to a desirable or undesirable outcome) resulting from a given action and or inaction.

Everyday cycling on the streets of London carries the risk of being knocked down by a car on the road. Yet thousands of cyclists take to the roads on a daily basis. I couldn’t. Because it carries too much of a risk for me.

Risk therefore is in the eye’s of the beholder. The risk involved in any task is related of the skills, training and experience you have in the given task.

What you considers as safe, such as being in paid employment is probably a risky venture to the business owner.

Don’t let the fear of failure hold you back. Think of all the benefit that would come your way if you succeed, and then take one small step at a time.

#12. Courage

You must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear ~ Martin Luther King Jnr

Courage is not an absence of fear. Courage is you acting in-spite of your fears. Fear is never going to go away so stop trying to get rid of it.

Courage is like muscles that are built up with use. Learn to act even when afraid in little things and when the big one comes, you can draw from your history the courage necessary to see you through your present situation.

Courageous leaders are comfortable with making choices despite limited information, making choices within a limited time and having the grace and humility to admit that they have got it wrong rather than stick to their guns and wreck the ship.

#13. Smart

Smart

Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose. ~ Bill Gates

Smart is a difficult one to describe. How smart is smart or how dumb is dumb? The world is filled with smart people who have made stupid mistakes and not so smart people who have the wisdom to surround themselves with people smarter than they are. How smart are you?

Do you recognise your weaknesses and ensure that you have people who will complement you on your team? Are you smart enough to listen to them? They can protect you and your business from your blind spots. We all have them so you are no exception.

#14. Relational

Nothing is perfect. Life is messy. Relationships are complex. Outcomes are uncertain. People are irrational. ~ Chuck Palahniuk

What would the world be without people? I certainly wouldn’t want to be the only person in a world full of trees. I would rather have human beings with their quirkiness any-day.

The leader who has no follower is obviously going for a walk. You are going to have to spend time building relationships with people, some of whom will be your colleagues, your employees and your customers. And yes they may not respond as you predicted. That’s because they are human beings with a free will which is used without rational at times.

So quite being upset with people. They are not going to be eradicated from the face of the earth.

Love people, learn to understand their needs and then spend your time adding value to their lives and filling your identified needs. They will reward you with their follower-ship, loyalty and sometimes money.

#15. Communicator

First, you must realise and accept that clear communication is a two way process. It’s not enough to speak clearly. You have to make sure you are heard and understood. ~ Lee Froschhelser

There’s no doubt in my mind that communication is one of the essential skills a leader must have. Here are a few things that can help your communication

1. Have great clarity as to what you want to say and why you want to say it.

2. Keep it simple. Avoid jargon and use everyday words. No one will be impressed with your big words if they don’t know what it means. And don’t kid yourself. They will not bother to look it up in the dictionary.

3. Say what you have to say and then listen for feed back that will give you clues as to whether you have been understood or not.

4. Remember to keep the body language in line with the message.

Do you recognise any of this qualities?

#2. Leadership 101 Series

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Leadership 101 Series

#6. Visionary

The vision of the leader sets the tone and provides a sense of direction for the organisation. You the leader must have the ability to galvanise your team effort behind the vision and thus propel your organisation into the future you have envisaged.

Many will look up to your leadership for direction in their own personal lives. When people commit to a vision, they commit to a person. That is you the visionary. They look to hear what you have to say, how you say it and what you do after you have said it.

Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela envisaged a world that was completely different from  the one they lived in. They inspired their followers to take action at great cost to make that vision a reality.

Take a look into the future. What do you see? The further in the future you can see, the better the quality of your decisions today that brings you closer to the future you envisage.

#7. Goals

10 Reasons To Have Written Goals

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible. ~ Tony Robbins

Goals are like magnets that draw out the potential for achieving great things that can lie dormant inside of you. Your goals are the markers on your road to success.

You must have goals. They may be as simple as a list of things you want to achieve. They must be realistic and they must make you draw from the strength you did not know you have.

If you set out to achieve nothing, that is precise what will happen. You will achieve nothing. If you have your goals written out, you have a plan of action for achieving these goals and you have the discipline to follow your plan, then you are on your way to being a successful entrepreneur.

#8. Strategy

All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer, but what non can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved. ~ Sun Tzu

Strategy deals with the long term direction. Is the lack of strategic leadership a contributory factor to why small businesses stop growing? One thing is for sure, growth is not automatic. You need a strategy and a plan for your’s and your organisations growth.

The only way to shake of the ‘small’ label attached to you and your organisation is to grow, grow and grow. How do you plan to grow?

You take a position in relation to the future opportunities and threats you and your organisation will face. You then commit resources today to position yourself to whether the storm or take advantage of the opportunities that will present itself.

#9. Team

Rowing team

I need to give power to other people, allowing them the creativity and freedom to explore new ideas and ways of thinking. ~ Jill Cleveland

Leadership is a team effort not a solo expedition. Leaders know they cannot do it alone. You the leader must therefore develop the ability to get the best out of others.

The foundation of your team effort is the building of trust. With trust comes the ability to engage in real dialogue around issues. Everyone has to pull his or her weight. This requires commitment to the success of the team or the achievement of vision.

You the leader must inspire your team to rise to heights far beyond the sum of their individual efforts. To quote a chinese proverb:

If you are planning for one year, grow rice. If you are planning for twenty ears, grow trees. If you are planning for centuries, grow men

#10. Emotional Intelligence

Leaders lead people and not organisations. Humans are emotional beings. We think with our head but we act with our heart. Your emotions and the emotions of the people you lead matter.

Emotional Intelligence is your ability to recognise and understand emotions in yourself and others and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behaviour and relationships. Saying the right thing at the wrong time can lose you a client. Resist the urge to say it as it is.

You inability to control your bouts of anger will get you passed over for the promotion that you have worked hard for.

Getting ahead in life requires more than a high intelligence quotient IQ score. You also have to have a high EQ or emotional quotient.

How do you inspire your Team?

The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious~ John Scully

Leadership 101 Series

#1. Vision

A vision is not just a picture of what could be. It is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.

Your vision for your life and for your business is the future desired outcome you want. It need not be related to your present reality because you have in you the ability to create something from nothing.

My question is not do you have a vision? Rather I would ask do you know where you are going with your life, your business or your finances. If you continued on the same road doing the same things, you are bound to get the same results.

Take a moment to picture where you will be in five years, ten years and fifty years? If you don’t like what you see, then take some time to create a new future for yourself, your family and your business.

#2. Dreams.

All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them~ Walt Disney

The real power of your dreams is in your ability to articulate it and share it with someone. Finding the right words to represent what you see in your dreams can be difficult.  But you must share it with someone. This helps you to move it from your head to your mouth and back through your ears as you are reenergised by what you hear.

If you cannot find the right words, use whatever words come to mind. Don’t let your dream die in you. In the words on an unknown author, many dreams die because they are kept within… Dreams are opportunities waiting to happen.

Take a few minutes today and dream about the future of this Planet.

#3. Pleasant To Be Around

Peoples personalities, like buildings, have various facades, some pleasant to view, some not. ~ Francois de La Rochefoucauld.

Are you pleasant to be around? Do people enjoy your company?  This can be a blind spot for you. You just may be scoring yourself more points on the likability scale than you should.

People are more interested in themselves than in you. So if you are that person who is interested in others, you will immediately move up their likability scale.

Developing an interest in others will mean that you have to take time to ask the right questions and to listen to understand and to know what is it that others care about.

#4. Understanding People

When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudice and motivated by pride and vanity ~ Dale Carnegie

Human beings are the pride of Gods creation and they defy logic, do stupid things and can be cruel to one another. But deep down when all the bravado is gone, they are fun to be around.

My question to you is, do you understand people? If your answer yes, then good for you. If your answer is no, you are not alone. To achieve great things in life, you will need people either as partners, customers or investors.

You cannot get away from people so don’t try and lock yourself up on a deserted island. It’s no fun. Accept the fact that there will always be people to share this world with you. Don’t try and change them, just make the effort to understand them and then get on with doing life with people.

#5. Persevere

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up ~ Thomas A. Edison

Many in your team will be looking up to you to lead by example. When you decide on a course of action, how soon do you change your mind.

I used to have the habit of working on more than one project at a time. To some people, this shows a lack of focus. To others this is multitasking.

The weakness of this multi-project strategy is that if I hit an obstacle in one or if it is taking too long to achieve the desired result, I have a tendency of abandoning the difficult one and continuing with the not so difficult one. I am now learning to persevere and see my ideas through to a logical conclusion. Using the Lean Startup methodology, you can come up with realistic points at which you decide to persevere or pivot.

How about you? Do you persevere in the face of obstacles and difficulties.

10 Reasons To Have Written Goals

People with clear written goals accomplish far more in a shorter period than people without goals can ever imagine ~ Brian Tracey

10 Reasons To Have Written Goals

Goals are the foundation of your dreams and the driving force behind your desired lifestyle. Whether your have an ambition to run a marathon or take up heathy eating , setting goals and having them written down will increase your chances of achieving success.

If we all agree that goals are important to success, why do many people not have goals? Of the people that have goals, only a few have written goals and fewer still regularly review their goals and plans.

Whatever your reasons for not having a written goal, let me give you 10 reasons why you should have written goals for all areas of your life.

  1. Take Charge And Take Control Of Your Life

Your decision to set a goal or goals is an indication that you have made the choice to take control of your life. You have decided to be intentional about your life and about achieving your dreams and desires.

There are two kinds of people and businesses. Those who get what they want and those who take what they get.

The act of goal writing means you are no longer leaving events to chance. You are no longer living life by default but are actively engaged in the design of the life and lifestyle you want.

  1. Create The Future You Desire

Goal setting and writing will help you take a good look at your future. If you don’t like what you see, then you have the opportunity to design the ideal future for yourself. This is also called having a vision for your life.

I must add a word of warning here. Just because you have created an ideal world is no guarantee that you will end up in the place as you have envisaged. But your long term vision will serve as a catalyst that provides the motivation you need in the short term for goal achievement.

Most people will spend more time planning for their next holiday than planning for their financial future. Take some time to think beyond your next holiday and develop a plan for your life.

  1. Recover From Setback And Move Forward

Recover From Setback And Move Forward

Many things happen to us in our lives that we have no control over. One thing in our control is our response to events that happen to us.

With goals in place, you are able to view an adverse event as a temporary setback. If you have to amend your goals in the light of new information, you are equipped to do so.

Sometimes, there is no need for a change direction. But a change in the timing for the achievement of your goals.

  1. Get The Assurance That You Are Making Progress.

Part of goal the setting process is to set markers along the way that will help you measure your achieved progress. This gives you an objective way of knowing whether you are moving forward or simply going round in circles.

Being busy with work is not the same as making progress. If your effort is not contributing to but rather taking you away from your desired goals, knowing this as early as possible in the process will help you take corrective action.

Progress has nothing to do with speed, but with direction ~ Author Unknown

  1. Maintain Focus On Your Dreams

Distractions are a part of life. As I continue the process of writing this book (assuming I am writing a book), I have to battle with short term and long term distractions. Since I have a goal of completing the book by a specified time, I continually look for ways to overcome distractions that can delay or completely derail my goal.

Having goals that are time bound will help you maintain focus on what needs to be done.

If you do have a long term project, then breaking it down into smaller shorter term goals will increase your focus and the chances that you will reach your goal.

  1. Keep Going When You Are Unsure

Keep Going

Think of your goal as a destination and your plan of action as a roadmap for arriving at your destination.

Whenever you are unsure of when you will achieve your dreams or goals, simply take a look at the map to re assess where you are on the journey.

Remember that having written goals is not enough. You must continually work on the process of implementing the plans that will drive you towards your goal.

  1. Increase Productivity

Your goal is the end result or your destination; to use the map analogy. But there are many other destinations along the way. These are the smaller shorter term subgoals and tasks that need to be done to reach the bigger goal.

Scheduling tasks to be done on a daily basis and then allocating blocks of time to work on these task will increase your productivity and  help you become more efficient with your time.

You will become a master at working on what you want when you want. You have allocated the time and you are utilising the allocated time for the scheduled task.

  1. You Become Self Disciplined.

Just because you have scheduled a task does not mean you will work on the task in the scheduled time. If your destination is attractive enough, you will not give up on the journey.

Self discipline, diligence and determination are some of the ingredients for the journey.

If there are areas where you lack discipline, try setting some goals in that area and then commit to implementing the steps to achieving you goal.

  1. Grow And Mature

Grow And Mature

If you have the courage to set goals that will stretch you and take you out of your comfort zone, you will reap tremendous growth in your life and business.

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals ~ Zig Ziglar

You become a bigger and better person. You will acquire new knowledge and skills that can be deployed to take you to new heights unimagined.

So don’t set goals based on your present position. Use your imagination and tap into your inner desires to set goals that will stretch you.

  1. Meet The Right People

Big dreams must be bigger than any one person. If you can do it alone, then you probably have not set yourself a big enough challenge. It will require building the right team and having the right accountability partners to achieve a big vision.

Meeting the right people will not automatically happen. You need to creatively and persuasively convey your imagined future into the hearts of people to inspire them and move them to action.

Your clearly defined goals, well thought out and written plans for action and choice of words will help determine who you will attract.

I am aware that not all ten reasons will apply to you. So take some time and think about the ones that resonate with you. Go to work and set goals for what you want to achieve. Write down these goals along with action plans and commit to the implementation of your goals.

Have you got a written plan for your life? How did you benefit from implementing the plan?

Leading on Purpose – Decide and Act

We cannot predict the future. But we can create it. – Jim Collins

Leading on pPurpose - Decide and Act

In March 1975 after watching a boxing thriller featuring the legendary Mohamed Ali, Sylvester Stallone put pen on paper and wrote the script for a movie. On completion, he could only find a producer and director who was prepared to pay good money for the script but without Stallone as the lead actor. This was not part of Mr Stallone’s original plan, so he refused the money. He was offered increasingly larger sums of money which he also refused until the producers gave in and cast Mr Stallone as the lead actor in the movie. Rocky went on to become a big hit movie and Sylvester Stallone’s ticket to fame.

Mr Stallone did not predict his future. He created his future. He was not leaving his future to chance.

How about you?

Lead on purpose

To lead on purpose is to to be intentional about your leadership, to be deliberate, and to understand that nothing is going to happen until you make it happen. The person with the largest stake in your success is you.

So how do you make things happen? The simple answer is to make a decision and take action. Leaders are decision makers. You will have to decide on a variety of issues every day.

How actively involved are you in the creation of your future? Are you leaving everything to chance and hoping for the best? Many things are out of your sphere of influences; for example the price of petrol at the pump. But you can control a lot more things about your future than you think or do anything about.

So be comfortable with choosing

  1. Be comfortable with choosing in the face of uncertainty. Your role is to make the effort. The outcome is in the future and will remain uncertain.
  2. Be comfortable with making a choice in the limited time.
  3. Be comfortable with the fact that you will at times make the wrong choice. Be flexible and ready to make changes as new information is available to you.

The future is unpredictable

Leading like a champion is setting out to help you create your future. Yes the future is completely unpredictable and there are many complex factors that come into play in the fast changing world that we live in today. But this is no excuse to be laid back and hope for the best. The best may or may not come. But with you prepared, with you actively involved and with you making decisions, you can tilt the outcome in your favour.

Here are a few things you can do today to create your future

  1. Start work on your long term plan. How about a 10 year plan.
  2. Give some thought to how you prioritise your work.
  3. Determine to win the battle against procrastination.
  4. Commit to a daily exercise routine.
  5. Give consideration to your spiritual growth.

How do you see Time?

Have you ever had a boss who is so fussy about time? He will tell you off for being five minutes late for meetings and would abruptly end the conversation once the allotted time for the meeting is over.

How do you see Time?

Have you got friends or family who despite your pressuring them for the specific time they will arrive at your house will not commit themselves to anything other than to say, ‘see you on Saturday night’?

We all perceive and prioritise time differently. Our time sense can be poles apart and yet we have to get along well with one another.

Today I will be talking about two different ways in which people are known to see time and organise their schedule.  I will use two different words to represent these and I will tell you why you need to be aware of your time sense.

So what are the two ways in which people perceive time?

1. Monochronic – Time as a line sequential of events

  • These people see time as being divided into fixed elements such as seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and so on. To them these components of time can be organised, scheduled and manipulated to achieve desired results. You may begin to think that most people probably wear a wrist watch or have some form of time piece that is divided into seconds, minutes and hours. While that may be true, not all of us see our days as being made up of individual seconds, minutes or hours.
  • The monochron will plan his or her day in detail and stick religiously to this plan.
  • Time commitments are taken very seriously by such persons and if given an appointment for 1o’clock, he or she will get there at least five minutes early. They emphasise promptness.
  • The monochron will only do one thing at a time, will concentrate on that job and will not take kindly to any interruptions.

2. Polychronic – Do many things at a time and involve people

  • Polychrons prefer to keep their time unstructured and will not plan their day in detail. This means that they change plans easily and often.
  • The polychronic person takes delight in doing more than one thing at a time and will move around freely from one activity to another. They are highly relational and as such are committed to people. They welcome interruptions and will base promptness on relationships.
  • The polychron will not necessarily break up a conversation because of an up coming appointment. For them a time commitment is an objective to be achieved if possible.
  • Polychrons can and do meet deadlines, but they do so in their own way without imposing on themselves or allow someone to impose on them detailed plans and schedules.

How can this help you?

Why do you need to know this or of what importance is this to you?

We live in a world made up of people and knowing your time sense can help you gain a bit more insight about yourself. Being aware that other people can and do place greater or less emphasis on time and time commitments will reduce your stress level and improve your relationship with others.

I will give you three examples:

In the home.

My wife is an example of a polychron. If we are planned to go out for a meal say on Saturday night. For her Saturday night is good enough as the time because she has so many things she wants to do before going out. For me saturday night is not good enough. I want a bit more detail say 7.30, 8 o’clock. I also have a few tasks I want to accomplish but I would rather schedule it and commit myself to a particular time. I do not get stressed over this anymore.

At work

You may have a boss who is so fussy about time and will tell you off for being 5 minutes late for an appointment and will abruptly end the meeting once the allotted 15 minutes is up. For this monochronic boss, time is exact and he or she see’s your being late as both indifferent and disrespectful. You on the other hand find his abrupt end to the meeting rude and disrespectful. You can reduce the conflict in the work place by making an effort to get to appointments on time and your boss can find more tactful ways to bring the meeting to an end once the time is up.

Personal and career development

To achieve your long term goals, you will more often need to break it down into smaller shorter term goals. You may decide to view your goals as sequential and work on one at a time, or you can multitask working on many projects at the same time. Knowing the different options helps you feel a lot more comfortable with yourself.

Are you a monochron or a polychron?

If you live your life by schedules and appointments and have planned your day to the minute and second, be aware that others may not. Tactfully end conversations and proceed to your next appointment. Remember that the colleague at work who is always late for meetings may not be lazy and disrespectful. His time sense may simply be different from yours.

On the other hand if you are always late for appointments and consider your boss rude for cutting you off in the middle of a conversation, it will be helpful to others for you remember that some people do take their time commitments very serious. If you have been allocated time to say something, avoid the bell of shame and say it all on time.

I leave you with this quote from Carl Sandburg,

Time is the coin of your life. Its the only coin you have and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest other people spend it for you
